Nothing Is Accidental!
Every detail has a reason.
In India, red has always marked a beginning.
It's the color of a bride on her wedding day.
A thread tied before a prayer.
The first mark on a new ledger.
The invitation to a celebration.
The moment before a new chapter begins.
For generations, red has been the color of becoming.
The bride is perhaps the most beautiful example of this.
She spends months preparing for a single day.
Every detail considered.
Every choice intentional.
And when the day arrives, she isn't simply dressed differently.
She becomes someone new.
We thought about that while creating Subversion.
Because fragrance is often part of life's important transitions.
A first date. A new city. A promotion.
A heartbreak. A wedding. A morning after.
Moments when one version of you quietly gives way to another.
That's why our bottle is red.
Not to stand out.
But to remind us that the most meaningful things in life begin with transformation.
We believe that all human emotions are layered.
A person is never just one thing.
A memory is never just one moment.
An emotion is never just one feeling.
We carry contradictions.
Confidence and doubt.
Desire and restraint.
Comfort and chaos.
The same is true of fragrance.
The scents that stay with us are rarely built around a single note. They unfold through layers, revealing different parts of themselves over time.
Our monogram is inspired by that idea.
Two forms meeting, overlapping, and becoming something entirely new.
A symbol of layering.
Not just in fragrance, but in life itself.
Because who we are is shaped by the people we meet, the places we go, the memories we keep, and the versions of ourselves we leave behind.
Nothing meaningful exists in isolation.
Everything gains depth through layers.
A fragrance. A memory. A story. A life.
The monogram is a reminder of that belief.
That the most beautiful things are not singular.
They are layered.
The Bombay we grew up in looked very different from the city it is today.
Before the glass towers and high-rises arrived, the skyline was made up of low-rise buildings with sloping roofs, water tanks, drying clothes, and terraces that felt like extensions of home.
Summer vacations were spent outdoors.
Playing cricket in narrow lanes.
Climbing staircases we weren't supposed to.
Losing tennis balls onto neighbouring rooftops.
Those roofs became the backdrop to some of our earliest memories.
Years later, while designing Subversion, we found ourselves returning to them.
The shape of our cap is inspired by the rooftops that surrounded us growing up in Bombay.
Not because they were architecturally remarkable.
But because they remind us of a city, a childhood, and a time when the world felt a little smaller and every evening seemed to last forever.
Sometimes design isn't inspired by monuments.
Sometimes it's inspired by the places that quietly become part of who you are.
If you grew up in Bombay in the early 2000s, you'll probably remember the military dog tag necklace.
For a while, every cool kid seemed to have one.
You'd find people crowding around stores in Colaba looking for them. They weren't expensive. They weren't rare. But somehow they felt important.
Maybe because they felt personal.
You wore them every day.
They picked up scratches.
They became part of your photographs.
Part of your friendships.
Part of who you were at that moment in time.
Years later, when we started designing Subversion, we found ourselves thinking about those dog tags again.
Not because they were fashionable.
But because they represented something every young person searches for — an identity.
A small object that feels uniquely yours.
That's what inspired the tag on our bottle.
A reminder that fragrance is personal too.
The scents we wear become attached to moments, people, places and versions of ourselves that exist only in memory.
Every bottle of Subversion tells a story.
And we wanted a small piece of our own story to travel with it.
Subversion began with a simple belief.
Fragrance is not really about notes.
It is not about oud, rose, vanilla, leather, musk, amber, or citrus.
Those are ingredients.
The real material is emotion.
A scent matters because it attaches itself to something larger than itself.
A moment. A person. A room. A city.
A version of you that existed for a while and then quietly disappeared.
Long after faces fade and conversations are forgotten, scent remains.
It lingers in memory with a clarity that few things can.
That is what we are trying to bottle.
Not perfume in the traditional sense.
But human states.
Desire. Distance. Comfort. Longing. Confidence. Vulnerability. Aftermath. Memory.
The chemistry comes later.
First comes the feeling.
Because every life is made up of moments that deserve to be remembered.
Some are romantic. Some are embarrassing. Some are private. Some are dangerous.
Some seem ordinary until years later, when a familiar scent brings them rushing back without warning.
These moments are universal.
They belong to no country, no language, and no culture.
They belong to being human.
That is why Subversion exists.
To create fragrances inspired not by trends, but by the emotional experiences that connect us all.
Yet emotion alone is not enough.
A meaningful story deserves exceptional craftsmanship.
That is why every fragrance begins with an idea, but is brought to life through an uncompromising pursuit of quality.
We work with some of the finest talent, ingredients, and partners in the industry to create fragrances that are as exceptional in composition as they are in meaning.
Because while emotions inspire what we create, craftsmanship determines whether those emotions endure.
We are an Indian fragrance house built for the world.
But by drawing from our own experiences, memories, and culture while holding ourselves to the highest standards of perfumery.
We believe the future of fragrance belongs to brands that have something to say.
Not just something to sell.
Subversion is where human stories meet world-class perfumery.
Fragrances for the things people feel but rarely say out loud.
Human emotions, bottled.
We often joke that we were chosen by the Cat Distribution System.
Like many first-time pet parents, we began by doing what most people do — we bought our first cat.
And then everything changed.
What started with one cat slowly turned into something much bigger than we ever expected.
We found ourselves feeding strays around the neighbourhood. Leaving food out after work. Learning the faces, personalities, and routines of cats that weren't technically ours but somehow became part of our lives anyway.
Before long, our office doors were always open to the occasional visitor.
Then came the rescues.
Today, three rescue cats call the Subversion office home. The dogs come and go as they please. They stop by for a meal, an afternoon nap, a little air-conditioning, and sometimes just to remind us who really runs the place.
They've been part of Subversion from the very beginning.
Present through the late nights, the product samples, the small wins, the setbacks, and everything in between.
In many ways, they helped shape the culture of this place long before the fragrances did.
So this is a small thank you to Smush, Sasha, Leo, Raya, and our beloved street dog Captain, who despite his size and seniority, still manages to get bullied by the cats on a regular basis.
Subversion may be built around human emotions, but a small part of its heart has always belonged to animals.
If you look closely, you'll spot them every now and then on our Instagram.
Usually sleeping.
Occasionally causing trouble.
Always at home.
